West Coast Trail has officially re-opened

The West Coast Trail finally got its official welcome back on to the map, after hikers had restarted trips on the daunting route back in May.

First Nations’ ceremonies and speeches by the stewards of trail were held at the northern trailhead, in the coastal village of Bamfield. The trail had officially been out of commission since last December, when a major wind storm swept in off the Pacific Ocean and rendered considerable damage to it. But the trail was repaired by May, after intensive work by Parks Canada and the Quu’as West Coast Trail Society, and was back in use by May 15.

The West Coast Trail hugs the western shoreline of Vancouver Island, between Bamfield and Port Renfrew. It was originally cut in 1906, as an escape route for sailors who were shipwrecked in the rocky waters off of Vancouver Island. It has since become a popular recreational trek, renowned for its difficulty and coastal scenery. The 75 km. trek takes generally five to seven days to complete, and hikers must be prepared for some tough slogging.

The West Coast Trail cleanup cost was about $750,000. The reopening cermonies had been delayed until recently to better mesh with the start of centennial celebrations for the trail. Events related to the centennial are being scheduled throughout the next year.
